I asked this question last night but all I got were really lame answers. This takes some serious deep knowlege of how computers work. I have a very fast computer with 256 Megabytes of memory running windows 98. I've stayed with 98 because I know where each and every file is located. That's important to me so I can manage windows myself. Please don't suggest that I solve this problem by upgrading. That would probably make things even worse. My IE is starting very slow. It takes about a minute to come up. It starts out ok (the hard drive takes off but then stops) and there is a dead silence of about 45 to 60 seconds seemingly doing nothing. Nevertheless, given enough time explorer does come up and works fine after that. I've been researching this on the net and following all advice. I've run fdisk followed by defrag. I've bought the top of the line registary cleaner (according to PC magazine) and run that (RegCure) and it found and fixed over 90 problems, most of which were "path" problems probably left-over from removed programs. I followed that with a registry defrag program to put it top condition. No improvement. I've removed all off-line files including anything from browser stored files and have even erased all cookies. My start-up program file is empty. I used a yahoo toolbar but removed it just in case IE was trying to load the icons used there because we know that they are stored off-system and have to be loaded in when IE starts. I've also confirmed that there is no virus using Norton Anti-Virus (2008) and no adware stuff using a registered version of ad-aware. So, if the registry is clean and defraged, there is no virus or adware on my computer and the hard drive has all files in-line and clicking on anything local to my computer starts instantly, plus all browser temporary files and all cookies have been removed, the computer and my network connection are not the problem. My DSL connection is good because once I have IE running, I can jump from page to page very fast. However, any call for another instance of IE such as a link causes the same minute delay launching IE again. I'm at my wits end. I've checked Yahoo answers to this same question and I've already well covered all that ground. I've found out all I can using google. What do I do next? Take it to a computer store? Do they know more than we've discussed and I've already done here? I want a real technical answer this time. Perhaps I have too little memory but I doubt it - BUT it could be why this happens. Remember, NO registry problems, NO hard disk problems, NO virus, NO adware, NO internet connection problems, NO toolbar download problems left, NO startup page left - I have to ask - What's left to do?? What am I missing? This must be hardware somewhere I suspect. I have no problem with my internet connection tho - it's very fast. Once (a minute later) that IE starts, it works like a champ but getting it to start-up is seemingly impossible. Does anyone really know the answer to this dilema? If you do and it works, I'll buy you the best meal that you ever wanted :) Rich moreResolved Question: IE (Internet Explorer) start up is very slow - Need expert help?
I have a very fast computer with tons of memory running windows 98. I've stayed with 98 because I know where each and every file is located. We have a problem with that IE. IE has performed an illegal operation and must close. On the details it says stack dump further down. This is by far not the first time it has happened we usually end up getting it reformatted which runs $25 and up. Then over time it will do it again. The comp. not showing viruses at all and we've done scan disk and defrag. not necessarily in that order. Yet stack dump error keeps popping up. If we wan't to keep windows 98 For Now is there any temp. quick fixes? Should we get it reformatted again? Awful lot of money. BTW We know we're upgrading to XP soon but we have Austin (autistic child) who loves his 98 and knows how to use it well when it's working. ThanksIE is internet explorer. moreResolved Question: How do fix my hard drive?
My hard drive is corrupt and i am 98% sure it doesn't have physical damage. i won't let me re-install windows or upgrade, or save files. would it be a virus or do i need to partion or defrag or something? please help me and tell me how to fix without a new hard drive. moreResolved Question: computer problems?
This problem is with my mothers computer, and yes compaired to todays computers her is ancient. My parents still run windows 98. I have been unable to defrag. computer because the computer locks up when I run the scan disc, therefore the computer does not finish the scan. I know that not being able to defrag it makes it slower, and yes I have shut down the programs running all but explorer and systry....and it still locks the computer up to where I have to manually turn it off. I am now at a loss as to what to do...they are both retired and on a fixed income, so taking it in to a tech is kinda out of the question. I need some suggestions as to how to get this thing defraged, and hopefully speed it up some. Thank you for your time. moreResolved Question: Overheation...?
About 4 years ago a friend of my dad's was surfing around on my dad's computer, without permission. As he was surfing the web, he must have downloaded some type of malacious Trojan virus. As a result, my father had to backup all old files (and he owns a sign company, so this was screwed up) and use a new backup drive. Now, he's been using the same computer since that event. And while things never quite worked the same after this incident (e.g. couldn't defragment his comp.), he was able to run his business successfully. Yesterday, he found that while he was running his comp. in Normal mode, it all of a sudden switched to Safe mode. My dad saw it as an oppurtunity to defrag the comp. It took 4 tries to get the percentage up to 97%, and then the comp. shut down. So, he tries again to defrag in safe mode. Same thing happens. Later on, he was able to work in normal mode, although he was a bit wary. He wakes up today to find that the computer won't turn on. ? (Windows 98 SE) moreResolved Question: What does it mean when DeFrag stays at 0% all night long?
laptop is Windows 98 based (had XP put on), 646MHz, 320MB RAM (use to have only 250MB RAM than I added more) Is it because this laptop is too old to DeFrag? moreResolved Question: Reformat my computer?
I'm currently running Windows 98 Second Edition on my computer. I realized it's in crappy working order and I want to reformat it. I know I have to back up all my files (the ones I know I want to keep). But how do I got about ACTUALLY reformatting it? I looked in the "Getting Started Microsoft Windoes 98" booklet, but all it talks about is new installations and upgrading. Does anyone know how I got about just cleaning it all out and starting fresh? I do disk cleanup, disk defrag, and scandisk, but nothing is helping. Thanks!I've had my computer formatted before, while continuing to use windows 98 second edition moreResolved Question: before i really mess up let me ask yall what i'm really suppose todo?
This has todo with gettin this old windows 98 to run faster. I posted the question and one answer was to defrag[idid],clear cookies[i did], go into bios and make sure that the hard drive is the primary boot source. I went into bios but all i see is letters, kind of like a code. Same with the options on which one to use. Does anyone know which one is supposed to selected to accomplish what I'm trying todo. Sure don't want to mess up. What is alittle scary is that on the answer as to how toget to bios it ended with good luck.lol....Thanks again people moreResolved Question: Windows OS: Is it true that an "Upgrade" can have the same benefits as a "Clean" install?
Well I heard (believe) that if you perform an upgrade install, create a brand new account, and then delete the account that was originally there by using the "User Accounts" control panel applet - it will actually be the same as when performing a fresh install. Is this true? I think I can save lots of money by always buying upgraded versions of any OS! I also heard that people purposefully install Windows 95/98/Me/2000/XP and then immediately put in an Upgrade disc (Vista perhaps) without actually putting any user files on the previous OS. And plus, you can even clean out old Windows files using Disk Cleanup/CCleaner and then perhaps do a defrag. Hmm... moreResolved Question: Hello, I cannot scan my c drive or defrag? I am running win 98. I get error message"windows or other programe

I have run the defrag and scan disc programs and have CCLeaner installed. can a bigger monitor affect the speed? I have WIndows 98 and the performance says I have 68% free resources. Any suggestions would be appreciated! moreResolved Question: Defragging with Vista Home Premium?
VHP is so different from Millenium and Windows 98 and even though I found this once, I haven't been able to find it since then. Can someone walk me through, step-by-step, how to go in and defrag under this program please? I really like VHP but I don't think it is user friendly and that bugs me when someone makes a program more difficult than it needs to be. Appreciate any help anyone can give me.I have used XP and like it even less than VHP. I actually do like VHP except for trying to find things like the defrag or changing my colors, which I like to do occasionally. Most of the time it's just getting used to a new program because they are all different in one way or another, I just don't think it's as easy to find things on the Control Panel as it was in Windows 98 and ME. If it isn't broken, why fix it or actually change it like they did and make it difficult to find things? Interesting info on the defragging too often jan ~ I had never heard that before so will check into it before I set this one up to do it on a regular basis. Thanks. moreResolved Question: i am trying to get my scan disk and defrag to work but it keep's saying that disk utility locked the drive

I've tried just reinstalling 98, but it just goes back to same problems I had before: won't shut itself off, won't defrag. Reinstallation doesn't give me the option to reformat before I reinstall. Is there another way to reformat the hard drive??Am just trying to salvage this PC to give to a senior who can't afford one. Don't wish to upgrade it. moreResolved Question: Windows XP CMD?

I have a PC running windows 98 SE that keeps rebooting itself intermittantly. It will sit at the dsektop with no problems but at soon as I run certain programs it just reboots. I tried to do the usual defrag and scandisk and it defragged just fine but rebooted during scandisk twice. This lead me to believe that the hard drive was bad so I ghosted the old one and replaced it. This didn't work. I'm stuck and am not sure where else to look for clues short of throwing parts at it. moreResolved Question: disc defragmenter will not finish goes to about 3 and after 3or 4 hrs still on 3 windows 98 se?

moreResolved Question: Virus or Hardware crash or none of the above?
I have an old (ancient in some eyes) computer OS - windows 98. I use it primarily to check/send email and surf the internet (so nothing too intensive). My computer froze up while I was online, so I had to do a manual reboot. When it got through the Windows 98 startup window, the same internet screen came up - I could move the mouse but the display was frozen. I rebooted again and got the BIOS (I think is what it's called) screen up, but most of the words were garbled (i.e., windows was spelled wijows). I didn't change any settings and had it restart. Now it brings up a multi-colored distorted screen. I can boot in safe mode with no distortion and ran a virus scan that found nothing. I'm doing a defrag now. Does this sound like a virus or my graphics card is dead or something else?! Any help would be appreciated! Thanks. moreResolved Question: Please help me with my puter if you can. Please?

Then I tried scandisk but I can't even do that. I closed every single thing yet it still said "tried 10 times, close all" or whatever.
