Video Tape Archive Questions asked
Resolved Question: Has anyone read this book?
I heard this book read in installments on "Between the Covers" on CBC radio back in the fall of 1994. The fact that they were reading it there makes me pretty sure it's a Canadian novel and that there was probably something important about it or the author although I have no idea myself. I've asked this on librarything and no one knows. I've searched the net and I've emailed the CBC archives with no luck. Does anyone know anything about the book with this basic plot to it? It was basically a murder mystery. The lead character was a woman who played the piano, although this was not her full time job. She is scheduled to play at a relative/friend's wedding. The murder victim was a colleague. Over the course of the book she has an almost romantic entanglement with a guy who keeps asking her to play Gershwin. I remember the ending most clearly. Everything is going very badly, no one knows who the murderer is. She goes home to her rather secluded house and decides that watching a cheery movie will help. Right at the beginning of the book she had borrowed a video tape from the office labelled "The Sound of Music". She puts the tape on and curls up on her courch. But instead of seeing Maria singing in the Alps she sees a homemade video of a couple in a...rather compromising position. The murder victim is one half of this couple. She is suddenly able to put all the facts together and she realizes who the murderer is. She looks up and he is standing outside her window!! So she grabs her keys and races out the back door, through the woods to this old log barn, gets there in time and locks herself in. In the barn is an old boiler and an old organ. She hooks up the boiler to the organ as the murderer tries to get in first by driving his truck into the door and then with an ax. Somewhere in the process she knocks herself out, and when she comes to she sees that the boiler is just about to blow, so she sits down in front of the organ and plays the Hallelujah chorus over and over again. It's heard for miles around and she is rescued just as she passes out. When she wakes up, she is in the hospital. All the details are sorted out and her friend/relation whose wedding she is supposed to play at comes in and fusses about her injuries and how she can wear a hat at the wedding and no one will notice the stitches on her head. Has anyone read this? Anyone know what it's called? You will be answering a question I've had for 15 years if you know the answer to this. moreVoting Question: What is the best video codec/software for encoding standard-definition analog NTSC (Hi8 tape) with EasyCap USB?
I have several Hi8 tapes from my camcorder that I want to convert to digital on my hard disk. They are standard definition (720X480?) NTSC. I'm looking for a codec for archiving, that provides the best quality, even if the files produces are large. Also, I only have a 3.06 GHz Pentium 4 HT (Prescott) and a USB EasyCap capture device, so the codec has to be relatively fast (because I tried some codecs that maxed out the CPU and produced jerky video). If you can also recommend a specific software, that would help too. Thanks moreVoting Question: Still researching camcorders and another question?
still doing research on a camcorder for my family home movies and sons' baseball games. I saw a camcorder on Ebay and then some sample video clips from that camera model on Youtube that were great. The camera is the Sony Handycam HDR-HC3. It is an hdv with the mini tapes that I never thought I would use but apparantly I can shoot in HD but I can put onto a dvd in sd, since I don't have special hd dvd burners and blu ray. I figure I can hook up the recorder to my hdtv via hdmi but when I want to archive onto a dvd, I will have to do it in sd. That is ok for now. I was feeling a bit intimidated by the avchd format and am looking for ease. Now my problem is this...how long will a tape record (at hd mode) and if I need to use two tapes, is it easy to edit both into one file and then copy to DVD? Oy vay, so many questions Or would you suggest a canon fs100? moreResolved Question: Best way to archive home videos on digital format?
I have a bunch of home videos on analog VHS-C tapes and now ive moved up to digital camcorder but for long term storage what do people suggest? Im going to store backup dvd's but I also want to store everything on a portable hard drive. Should I save everything in the vob format or mp4, etc,..? Im looking for good quality but also not a huge file size. What does everyone else do? moreVoting Question: Best software to transfer old VHS and 8mm tapes to DVDs.?

Hi My trusty US-purchased JVC Mini DV camcorder broke recently and I bought a newer JVC model in the UK. My old raw video tape archives won't play on the new camcorder. The new one is widescreen format, but can be changed back to standard format. Neither is HD. The only other difference is where I bought them one in the US and one in the UK. Two questions really - help me understand and fix the problem. Is there a region-specific coding on Mini DV tapes (PAL vs NTSC) or has the encoding JVC uses changed in the last 4 years. What can I do to play the "old" tapes? Thanks!! moreResolved Question: I am looking for a combination VHS Tape Player/DVD Recorder?
I have seen a few around for sale, but, I have both Canadian and British Video Tapes, which I would like to archive to DVD. I am looking for a combo VHS Player which records direct to DVD, for both NTSC and PAL Formats. Thanks for any help Rather than having to use my PC, which just delays things. I have multiple speed tapes, recorded at SP, LP and EP over time, so this would need to be factored into the equation. moreResolved Question: Were you aware that the 9/11 dancing Palestinians was a media hoax but 9/11 dancing Israelis was a cover up?
http://www.archive.org/details/MythOfTheJewishLobby Israelis were caught dancing, hi fiving and cheering the 9/11 attacks, and the videos of dancing Palestinians was a taped broadcast of Israelis passing out food and water and candy to poor Palestinians. Were you aware of this? moreResolved Question: How could I find an old "America's Funniest Home Video's" clip?
I just recently found out that a family member of mine was unknowingly on America's funniest home videos! The problem is, the clip was shown maybe 7-15 years ago (it didn't win anything as far as we know). None of us have ever seen the clip, and the clip is only on one tape that none of us would have ever submitted. We think maybe a stranger taped it in the same area and submitted it. We would like to see the clip, but we don't know if it is possible, and if it is, we don't know how to go about it. Does anyone know if there is an online archive of all AFV clips? Or if it would be possible to contact AFV and describe the clip in hopes of finding it? Thanks in advanced for your help. -VM- moreResolved Question: What similarities does This Actual 9/11 Terrorist have in common with the newly elected Barack Hussein Obama ?

The Jim Harbaugh Show was filmed and aired by WTHR 13 and hosted by Dave Calabro in Indianapolis, IN while Harbaugh was QB for the Colts. I am looking for tapings or clips of this show. Does anyone know where I can find any? I have already contacted the studios of WTHR, and Dave Calabro himself told me that the tapes were archived and, according to policy, could not be sold or distributed now. I could not find any tapes or clips on the web, either. If anyone has any insight or ideas of where I could find any of these videos, I would be forever grateful!! moreResolved Question: In your opinion, will the LA Times cave in to the demands to reveal what they know & are protecting?
http://www.debbieschlussel.com/archives/2008/10/exclusive_dance.html "As you all know, the Los Angeles Times is holding hostage a tape of Barack Obama at a 2003 Arab American Action Network (AAAN) dinner at which his friends, Rashid Khalidi, William Ayers, and Bernadine Dohrn were in attendance. It's the story I started when Los Angeles Times plagiarist/"reporter" Peter Wallsten ripped off my January column on Barack Obama's Nation of Islam staffers and friendship with AAAN founder Ali Abunimah. But here's what you haven't yet heard: that a kids' dance troupe that appeared at the event has a history of simulating beheadings and stomping on American, Israeli, and British flags. Reports of the partial guest list at the 2003 dinner include "the Sanabel Debka troupe", but the group's name is really "Sanabel AlQuds Dabka troupe." Sanabel means "grains" or "kernels" (of wheat or barley) in Arabic. AlQuds, or "The Holy", is the Muslim name for Jerusalem, which is ripped-off from the eternal Hebrew name for Jerusalem, "Ir Kadosh", or Holy City. The Milwaukee-based Muslim kids dancing troupe purports to perform the debka, a Middle-Eastern step-dance. But this group, made up of mostly Palestinian Muslims and under the auspices of the Milwaukee Muslim American Society does far more in its "performance." And it's frightening. In June 2004, I went undercover and attended a Dearborn fundraising dinner for Islamic Relief, the Muslim Brotherhood charity that is a front for HAMAS and Al-Qaeda. The event was MC'ed by Rayed Tayeh, who orchestrated the Starbucks Coffee boycott and who is believed to be a HAMAS operative. Sanabel AlQuds performed to songs calling for martyrdom to "get back Palestine." The kids were young boys, some of them appearing to be no older than seven years old. But they didn't just dance the debkah. Suddenly the Sanabel AlQuds dancers pulled out fake swords and rifles and adorned three of their troupe respectively with an American, Isreaeli, and British flag. The others pretended to behead and/or shoot the boys wearing the flags. Then they put red scarves over the three boys heads, signifying blood and no head. Then, the flags were taken off, thrown to the ground, and trampled on by this young group of Milwaukee dancers. This was on the Sunday that U.S. contractor Paul Johnson was found beheaded in Saudi Arabia and not long after Nicholas Berg and several other westerners were found beheaded in Iraq. Once I saw this "performance" I realized why there were signs all over saying, "No video equipment or cameras allowed." moreResolved Question: Is Palestinian Arabs in Gaza Campaigning for Barack Obama?
Wednesday, October 29, 2008 12:04:11 PM · by STARWISE Israel National News ^ | 10-27-08 | Nissan Ratzlav-Katz Palestinian Authority newspaper reported on Sunday that Arab residents of Gaza are randomly calling Americans at home in hopes of persuading them to vote for Democratic candidate Senator Barack Obama in next month's US presidential election. The article in Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, first noted and translated by Palestinian Media Watch, quotes a young man from the Hamas-controlled Gaza region as saying, "We dial random numbers and try to call people [in the United States] without knowing their identity or their affiliation...." He reportedly uses "Internet sites that allow making free calls... in order to use them for the campaign supporting Obama."... In my Role-playing game, the Player Charecters have finally entered the archives of their arch-enemies, and they find a series of filing cabinets that the PCs think contain the secret plans of the villians or vital clues. They might indeed, but first they have to sift through their bizare contents. I need some ideas for what the filing cabinets might contain. Like in GURPS Warehouse 23, they can be humorous, dangerous, mind-boggling, or mundane. They may contain mementos of other plots, or be references to other genres or stories. The cabinets themselves might open up into other dimensions or contain surprises themselves. They certainly contain evidence that the PCs have been monitored and manipulated by the villians the entire time. Here are some ideas I've come up with so far. Opening a file cabinet results in seeing the back of the PC’s head as he opens a filing cabinet. A complete fictional series detailing the PCs adventures. Last book is blank. Positronic brain. In office notes. The cabinet contains the contents of the PC’s pocket/backpack. If checked, the PC finds them empty, and must now replace them. A coffee-cup, still warm. Picture of PCs in a junkyard which is about of the size of the archives room. Rusted cars and other objects are roughly in the same arrangement as the objects in the archives room. The PCs are lying around, apparently drugged and hallucinating, while opening and closing filing cabinets. Scattered around are needles and other drug-related materials. A half wound video tape. A VCR is broken. A severed robotic arm. The filing cabinet opens onto flames and smoke. The filing cabinet is empty, but opens unto a another filing cabinet. The filing cabinet unlocks many filing cabinets and opens into another room of filing cabinets. A chess set with the pieces carved to resemble the PCs on opposing sides of the board. Captain America’s shield (or easily identifiable artifact), the filing cabinet will not open enough to pull it out. A million dollars in currency unknown to the PCs. A corpse wrapped in plastic, it is a clone of the PCs A withered human hand, it is the PCs as identified by wrist watch or jewelry. A sack lunch that has been there for decades. Copy of the most religious book of the PCs. It is written backwards. Photos and medical files of one of the PC's parents, detailing in the installation of various implanted chips. Map of the archives area. Handwritten says “WAY OUT?” points to hidden door. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. moreResolved Question: How would I find out if anyone has rare video footage of the musical group "Baby Huey and The Babysitters"?
I have already tried "The Merv Griffin Archives" and contacted "The Mike Douglas Show", but they said all of those tapes from 1969 were lost or destroyed somehow during management change-overs.......But I think it's possible someone may have 8mm concert video somewhere........What would you suggest???? moreResolved Question: Best way to archive my old Hi8 video?
I have some old Hi8 video tapes Id like to preserve digitally. I purchased a video capture device (Diamond VC500 One-touch). I hooked up my old camcorder to it and started recording under NTSC-M and saved as mpeg4. I was able to record them fine but was unsatisfied with the picture quality when played on my computer. It recorded it as a mpeg file. I dont remember the resolution being this bad when I played my camcorder directly on my television. Am I recording the Hi8 tape in the right format for archiving/editing? If not, what is the best way to record and edit while retaining the resolution? Thank you for your advice.I am just using the software (PC) that came with the device to capture the video. There arent many settings I can change in the software. It looks pretty basic. I would like to edit the programs using something like iMovies (Mac). moreResolved Question: What is the best encoding method for archiving high quality videos.?
I have a digital video camera and want to archive all the tapes. Raw format is way too big. I can make DVDs of all the videos, but I've heard that this is an inferior encoding method to MP4. It's for archiving, so I'm looking for a standard format that will be supported and available in the future (so something like DivX is a bit sketchy), something that will preserve the high quality, and will compress the videos as much as possible.I can keep the tapes, but the tapes are Digital8, not exactly a standard format. Playing the tapes rely on working hardware years from now, something that isn't very likely. I don't even think you can buy a Digital8 camcorder these days. Ten years down the road if my old camcorder breaks I'm out of luck! It is much more desirable to have an archived version stored in computer format which can be copied and played well into the future. Of course the video will loose some quality when compressed. This is the whole basis of my question. I want an encoding method that gives reasonable compressions while maintaining as much quality as possible. My videos are currently in RAW, uncompressed format. They are huge. Current hard drive or DVD camcorders don't even store video in RAW format. They compress it using MP4 or something similar. If I were to use an encoding method similar to hard drive camcorders I would expect high quality videos at a much smaller size. moreResolved Question: why is mcain such a liar?

KGMB in Hawaii did a special on true ghost stories called "Chicken Skin." It was hosted by Glen Grant, and aired sometime in the 1990's. They used to sell copies of the VHS tape at Border's bookstore. Now, of course, they do not sell it, and do not have copies in stock anywhere. Some people were able to obtain a copy through KGMB, so I called KGMB for an archived copy. They told me that they too do not have it anymore. I used to have a copy of the tape, but after searching everywhere, it's gone. Does anybody know where I can get a copy of the tape? My girlfriend just sent me this via e-mail. A life lived well? U. Utah Phillips, a Grammy-nominated folksinger, rabble-rouser and anarchist whose wild white beard re-called his years as a tramp, died of heart disease May 23 at his home in Nevada City, Calif. He was 73. Phillips, who over four decades on the road combined storytelling with song, described the plight of the work-ing class, the power of labor unions and the necessity of direct action. He dubbed himself the "Golden Voice of the Great Southwest," but his words, more than his baritone voice, carried authority; he had been a soldier, railroader, state archivist, union organizer, founder of a homeless shelter and homeless himself. He recorded the oft-overlooked value of rubber pockets, a necessity when stealing soup. His tall tale "Gaffing" was a rich illustration of populist scams. He honored the likes of Hood River Blackie and Fry Pan Jack, and never hesitated to leaven his history lessons about the Ford Strike of 1932, the Spokane Free Speech Fight of 1910 and the Canine Corps of World War II with such hysterical stories as "Suspender" and "Blackie & the Duck." His fans have posted dozens of videos of him or his songs on YouTube; in the mid-1990s, a new generation discovered him when folk musician and entrepreneur Ani DiFranco edited about 100 hours of homemade tapes of his performances and combined them with electronic hip-hop, creating an album called "The Past Didn't Go Anywhere" (1996) and releasing it on her Righteous Babe label. In 1999, he collaborated with DiFranco on the live album "Fellow Workers," which was nominated for a 2000 Grammy in the contemporary folk album category. "He was a real storyteller in his performances. He was just a catalogue of people's history in United States," DiFranco said in an interview this week. "He was so engaging on many, many levels." Phillips was a card-carrying member of the Industrial Workers of the World (Wobblies), a radical union that called for all working people to unite. He ran, unsuccessfully, for president in 1976 as an anarchist, but he never voted — except in 2004 when President Bush's policies so enraged him, DiFranco said. "He voted for 'Not That Guy,' " she said. Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez, Tom Waits and Arlo Guthrie have all sung Utah Phillips songs, but he refused to let Johnny Cash record his standards, his eldest son told the Sacramento Bee newspaper, because he didn't trust the music industry. The Boston Globe called him "the kind of guy you'd want to sit next to on a long plane ride. Here's a rascal with a clutch of good songs that'll entertain you, educate you, and probably even get you fired up over the cur-rent state of politics." He was born as Bruce Phillips on May 15, 1935, in Cleveland to two labor organizers. His family moved to Utah in 1947, where Phillips learned to play the ukulele from an instruction manual, then took to the roads and rails of the West as a teenager. He adopted the name U. Utah Phillips in emulation of country vocalist T. Texas Tyler. "I worked with lots of old drunks only fit to shovel gravel, but they all knew songs, and they showed me how to play them," he said. Broke and out of work, he joined the Army in 1956 and was sent to Korea for three years. "I wanted to learn a trade, but all they taught me was how to shoot," he said in a Sing Out magazine interview. "What I really learned in the army was how to be a pacifist." After his discharge, he began to drink heavily and ride the rails. He drew a distinction between what he did and those of hobos and bums, quoting the 19th-century physician to the poor, Ben Reitman. "A hobo works and wanders, a tramp dreams and wanders, and a bum drinks and wanders," Phillips told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in 2006. "That's about right. I tramped. When I was on the freight trains, I wasn't looking for work. I was looking to go from place to place without paying any money." He took a job with the Utah state archives, and he volunteered at Salt Lake City's Joe Hill House, a shelter for tramps and itinerant workers. His 1968 race for a U.S. Senate seat as the nominee of the Peace & Freedom Party cost him his state job. He believed he was blacklisted. "All I had was an old VW bus, my guitar, $75, and a head full of songs, old- and new-made," he wrote two weeks ago in a message to his local radio station, KVMR-FM. "Fortunately ... I landed at Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs, New York. That seemed to be ground zero for folk music at the time. ... It took me a solid two years to realize I was no longer an unemployed organizer, but a traveling folk singer and storyteller." In 1973, folk fans discovered his song, "Moose Turd Pie," about the food served to laborers on a railroad gang. The bluegrass duo Flatt & Scruggs recorded his train song "Starlight on the Rails," and Joan Baez became the first of many to record the dark romantic ballad "Rock Salt and Nails," a song that became something of a folk and country standard. He settled in Nevada City, where he helped start the Peace and Justice Center and the Hospitality House, a homeless shelter. He launched a 100-episode syndicated radio show, "Loafer's Glory," and made occasional personal appearances, where he urged audience members to sing along on such tunes as "Dump the Bosses." Survivors include his wife, Joanna Robinson of Nevada City; three children, Duncan Phillips of Salt Lake City, Brendan Phillips of Olympia, Wash., and Morrigan Belle of Washington; two stepsons, Nicholas Tomb of Monterey, Calif., and Ian Durfee of Davis, Calif.; three brothers; a sister; and a grandchild. moreVoting Question: Mini-DV camcorder- thinking about purchasing one.?
I have heard and read that mini-dv has the highest quality picture compared to a DVD or HDD cam. BUT will the quality DEGRADE once I burn the footage to a full size DVD? Or is this only true if i use analog cables (yellow, white, red, s-video) as opposed to a USB/Firewire??? Also my PC has about 7 gigs of free space. When I transfer say a 60 min or 120 min mini-dv tape to my PC for editing, will this be enough space? I have heard that I don't need to worry about this as the video editing software "holds" the footage while you do all the editing before finally burning to DVD. Is this true? Do I need a bigger hard-drive? Also I don't have a DVD burner on my PC. Should I buy an external DVD burner or just buy a set-top DVD Recorder? This is why I wanted a DVD cam but they only record 20 min and are very sensitive to data loss due to the laser writing mechanism. Bottom line, any cam requires archiving to some type of media. When editing a DVD, can the footage be joined together? Thanks for the info. But I did read the following that I copied from an article. Is there still a loss of qualitly when I burn the mini-dv onto a full disk dvd? Also is it true that many mini-dv cams don't come with a charger? The camera itself is a battery charger? That kind of stinks. "The DV signal is transferred using the DV-out port also known as a Firewire port, or IEEE1394 and also as i.Link and connected to your computer by a Firewire cable. When transferring your footage by this method there is no loss of quality in the picture and audio and this is what makes this format so popular." moreResolved Question: How many receipt-less voting machines are used nation-wide?

Counterterrorism officials have been monitoring diligently since our first attack. In the last few months, they've said that chatter has accelerated and have even been watching a few radical websites. They're warning us that the terrorists are up to something. There are also several coincidences that could make this year significant. Tuesday is the Jewish high holy day of Rash Hashanah. We all know what Muslims think of the Jewish, and of us for helping Israel. The Islamic fasting season of Ramadan starts soon. Terrorist activity around the world is at it's highest during this time. September 11th, 2001 also fell on a Tuesday A new Bin Laden video was released An extremist website promises "a special gift on the anniversary of the blessed invasion of Manhattan." http://mypetjawa.mu.nu/archives/soon_invasion-of-manhattan.htm It's also tradition that they warn they're enemies three times before an attack. Sandy Berger went into our National Archive gov't document repository and stuck documents down his pants for later retrieval. What was he hiding? It seems likely there were documents he took that are lost. Also are there video tapes or finger prints to show what info in those documents he looked at??? What was he so afraid of??? Can we get an investigation with teeth to look into this before Sandy Berger is given a new job in a Hillary Administration!!!!???
